Window Formers – What Are They, And Why Do You Need Them?

Mara Tickner • Mar 22, 2021

Let the experts tell you…

Here at Shire Construction Products our dedicated professional team have over 2 decades worth of experience and knowledge of cavity closers of all types, our specialty being pre-formed window formers.

What Are They?
Our pre-formed profile system, FF4/5000, is made up of a rigid white uPVC profile, filled with a white EPS insulation. It has BBA Certification, and complies with building regulations Part L. The FF4/5000 is the easiest and quickest system as a 1st fix cavity closer for use on new builds and extensions. Made in our factory in Nottinghamshire and delivered direct to your site, it removes the need for site made timber templates around window and door reveals. The FF4/5000 is available in cavity widths of 75mm to 160mm in standard or check reveal, with a 30-minute fire-rated version also available for 100mm cavities. We can manufacture formers as 2, 3 or 4 sided, and to suit doors with flag windows in P or T shapes.

Why Do You Need Them?
The FF4/5000 will reduce the risk of cold bridging, condensation, mould and moisture ingress across the cavity. Cold bridging is caused by a colder element in the structure or fabric of the building allowing coldness to pass through. When warm moist air is present in the property and meets colder elements of the structure (cold bridging) condensation will form which will lead to mould. Shire Construction Products insulated cavity closers will reduce the heat loss that takes place around the openings and reduce the risk for future problems with mould growth and condensation.
